Did We Ever Really Leave the EU?

Back in 2013, when I first wrote about the EU, the whole thing already felt like theatre. Politicians shouting about sovereignty, newspapers pumping out fear and fantasy, and the public being marched from one narrative to the next like a flock waiting for instructions. Even then, it was obvious: whatever happened, Britain was never going to make a clean break. We were already too tangled in the wiring.

More than a decade later, the question hits harder — did we truly leave, or did we just rebrand the relationship and hope no one looked too closely?

We still trade under EU rules. We still align with EU standards. We still negotiate access to EU systems. Our planes, our data, our supply chains — all tied to Europe like an umbilical cord we pretend we cut.

Brexit was sold as a door slamming shut. In reality, it was a door left ajar with a “Do Not Disturb” sign hanging off it. Independence in speeches, interdependence in practice. A political magic trick: distract the audience with slogans while the machinery behind the curtain keeps running exactly as before.

Maybe that’s the truth we weren’t supposed to notice. Maybe we never really left — we just stepped sideways.

And now, looking back at that old post, it’s clear the writing was already on the wall. The UK was always going to end up half in, half out, orbiting the EU like a planet that escaped the system but never the gravity.

Some people call that failure. Some call it compromise. I call it exactly what it always was: the illusion of choice.
